Jessie's Legacy - About Maine Children's Cancer Program
Cancer is in a very real sense a family disease, and families dealing with cancer need the best possible care. The child needs the highest quality treatment available, based on the most current clinical research. The family needs support services to help its members cope and live their lives as normally and happily as possible.
The Maine Children's Cancer Program (MCCP) now serves hundreds of families from throughout Maine who have been touched by childhood cancer. Each year, approximately 35 new children from birth to age 21, along with their families, come to the Program for initial diagnosis and treatment.
At MCCP, the children and their families find an upbeat, non-threatening environment. The Program's objective is not only to cure as many children as possible, but also to heal and support the family. There are school re-entry and consultation programs, educational materials, counseling services, and support groups for patients and their families.
The MCCP does not bill families for mental health services, so the MCCP absorbs the cost of these programs. Fund raising is crucial to be able to offer these services.
